Curating the diaspora conversation

Welcome to this week's Afropolitan newsletter, where we're exploring what meaningful connections genuinely look like in our community.

We begin by spotlighting Kwamina Oblie Botchway, the visionary behind AfroPark. He's revolutionizing how African entrepreneurs connect and collaborate globally. His work reminds us that extraordinary things happen when we build intentional spaces for our community.

Speaking of intentional spaces, our partners at Legacy are elevating the dating experience for high-achieving African singles with their new Weekly Match feature. It's a refreshing departure from the usual dating chaos, offering carefully curated connections that honor our community's standards and value.

Finally, I'm addressing a viral video that's sparked essential conversations about dating standards in our community. As we build platforms for connection, whether professional or personal, we must honestly discuss what we genuinely value beyond surface-level metrics.

This week's newsletter is ultimately about raising the bar. Whether in business, dating, or personal growth, we advocate for deeper connections and standards that reflect our true worth.

Let's dive in.

Afropolitan Spotlight

I'm thrilled to spotlight an incredible community member this week - Kwamina Oblie Botchway, who embodies the entrepreneurial spirit we cherish at Afropolitan!

As the visionary CEO of AfroPark, Kwamina is creating a vibrant ecosystem where African tech entrepreneurs and creatives can truly shine. AfroPark is special because it focuses on building meaningful connections through dynamic events that showcase the incredible talent across our continent.

But here's what excites me about Kwamina's work: AfroPark isn't just another platform - it's a movement empowering African entrepreneurs to scale globally while staying true to their roots. Through thoughtful collaboration and community-building, they're creating spaces where entrepreneurs can forge partnerships, amplify their brands, and leverage technology to reach new heights.

What I particularly love about their approach is their commitment to equity and mutual growth. Every partnership they forge is carefully chosen to deliver real value to African entrepreneurs. As Kwamina says, "We're building a community where entrepreneurs and businesses help each other and share opportunities."

When he's not transforming the African tech landscape, Kwamina brings his financial expertise to his role as Investment Taxes Manager at Lloyds Banking Group. This blend of corporate experience and entrepreneurial vision makes him a powerful advocate for African innovation.

Kwamina and AfroPark's core values deeply resonate with what we're building at Afropolitan:

  • Collaboration: Creating meaningful partnerships that last

  • Empowerment: Helping African talent reach global audiences

  • Equity: Building a community where success is shared

We're proud to have leaders like Kwamina in our community, working to create opportunities and build bridges for African entrepreneurs worldwide! 🚀

Let's talk about this viral video that's been making rounds—you know the one: a 6'4" man making $100k explaining why he's such a rare commodity that women should be grateful for his existence. As a co-founder of Afropolitan and someone deeply invested in our community's growth, I have some thoughts.

First, let's acknowledge what's happening here. This man has reduced his entire value to three metrics: height, income, and being Black. And while there's nothing wrong with these attributes, presenting them as the ultimate measure of worth in dating is problematic at best and harmful.

Here's the thing - when did we start accepting essential stability as exceptional? A six-figure income in 2024 is solid, but it's not the flex some think it is, especially in major cities. Height is a genetic lottery, not an achievement. And is it being Black? That's our identity, not a dating credential. Everything that matters in building lasting relationships is missing from this conversation.

Where's the discussion about emotional intelligence? About being able to communicate effectively during conflicts? What about understanding partnership, showing up consistently, and having the capacity to grow together? These are the really rare commodities in today's dating landscape.

As successful, educated Black women, we must be honest about our standards. It's not about lowering or raising them - it's about redirecting them to what truly matters. A partner's worth isn't measured by their height or paycheck but by their character, emotional availability, and ability to build something meaningful together.

Think about it: Would you rather have a 6'4" partner who can't handle emotional intimacy or someone who actively works on themselves, communicates openly, and shows up as a true partner? Would you prefer someone who makes $100k but is financially irresponsible or who makes less but understands wealth building and shared financial goals?

To my dating sisters, I challenge you to reflect on your non-negotiables. Are they based on societal metrics or what you truly need for a fulfilling partnership? Are you selecting partners based on a checklist of surface-level attributes, or are you looking for someone who aligns with your values and vision for the future?

And to the gentleman in the video and others who share his perspective: Bringing basic qualifications to the table doesn't make you exceptional. What makes someone truly rare and valuable is their capacity for genuine partnership, emotional intelligence, commitment to growth, and ability to build something meaningful with another person.

Let's elevate this conversation. Let's talk about standards that matter - like respect, emotional maturity, shared values, and the ability to grow together. Because at the end of the day, your partner's height won't help you navigate life's challenges, and their income won't guarantee a happy home.

What are your thoughts? What standards do you think we should be focusing on in our community?

Weekly Legacy Match: Redefining Elite Dating

In modern dating, where meaningless swipes and superficial connections have become the norm, Legacy is the premier dating club for high-achieving African diaspora singles. Understanding that exceptional individuals deserve an outstanding approach to finding love, we're thrilled to introduce our latest innovation: Weekly Legacy Match.

This carefully crafted feature embodies everything that makes Legacy the preferred choice for accomplished professionals in our community. Unlike traditional platforms that overwhelm you with endless options, we believe in the power of thoughtful, curated introductions that honor your time and status. Every Thursday morning, selected members receive one meticulously chosen match, representing the finest of our exclusive community.

The process is elegantly simple yet remarkably effective. Each Thursday, you'll receive a private introduction to someone who shares your accomplishments and ambitions. These aren't algorithm-driven connections – they're carefully considered introductions to individuals who have been personally vetted to ensure they meet Legacy's exceptional standards. Your match's profile will showcase their professional achievements, aspirations, and interests, allowing you to evaluate the potential for a genuine connection.

What makes Weekly Legacy Match truly special is its focus on quality over quantity. We understand that our members – founders, executives, and distinguished professionals – value their time and energy. Rather than sorting through countless profiles, you can focus on one quality introduction each week. If there's a mutual interest, you can connect directly through our private messaging system, allowing conversations to develop naturally and meaningfully.

This innovative approach to dating reflects our understanding that exceptional relationships begin with extraordinary connections. Our members appreciate the sophistication of receiving one thoughtfully curated match rather than dealing with the overwhelming nature of traditional dating platforms. It's an approach that respects your time while maximizing the potential for meaningful connection.

For those who understand that true compatibility goes beyond surface-level matching, Legacy offers a refined approach to modern dating. We invite accomplished individuals who share our vision for elevated connections to inquire about membership. Join a community where exceptional singles meet their match and where every introduction could be the beginning of something extraordinary.
